We see the story from Ellie’s point of view, and what struck me was that her voice is Irish, but not overly so. Aug 05, Jade Keller rated it really liked it. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a dose of romance but a good grounding in reality. Her own achievements are always the paramount idea in her mind, she never considers renouncing anything for someone else.

I enjoy historical fiction and this book was no exception. Refresh and try again. The happily-ever-after, however, does not come, as both John and Ellie are swept up in the Irish revolution. I liked her a bit at the start, when she was in Ireland, I thought she was plucky if a bit islqnd, but as the novel wore on she never won ellls over or seemed to grow up, especially once she emigrated.

In a later scene, Ellie is waiting on the balcony looking down on the crowd to find her husband, and after standing there myself, I felt this scene was so well written. Especially kerrogan he became so bitter after he was shot and he wanted her to live with him in that rundown hovel in the arsehole of nowhere! It would have been nice if the author had spent a little more time developing the complexity of kae emotions, treating him with as much care at the end of the book as she had in the beginning.


I LOVED how open and honest this story is of the struggle of leaving home for the possibility of something better like so many emigrants did back in the ‘s. The Keeper of Lost Things. Ellie ends up loving katee in America, earning decent money, making friends, and enjoying this finer side of life. Once she reaches New York and begins her new yet temporary life the strangest of things happen — she begins to like life in America.

Islnd loved this book so much and her new one is just as good. For, she is kte to earn money for her husband, rather than being the one left behind waiting to be send for later. Reading Ellis Island is an adventure worth taking! Receiving hope in the form of a letter from her friend from school, Shelia offers Ellie hope in working in America for a rich lady in need of help. In addition, John, her husband becomes injured fighting for the Irish Republican Army. He knew what was truly valuable and never had to leave home to find out.

Ellie takes the opportunity of a job in service in New York City and plans to work there for a year to earn enough money for an operation to repair John’s hip to enable him to walk and work again. I remember wondering what it would feel like to be waiting for someone, and Kerrigan crystalizes that feeling through Ellie.

But I also understood John’s position and his reasons to want Ellie to come back to him and their home country.
